Literary Studies Senior Requirement
This requirement is only for literary studies majors who declared during or after Spring 2022.
Public Presentation
Presentations can include Academic Symposium presentations (nominated 20-minute talks that occur in mid-April) or other panels scheduled through capstone classes. The work need not be new, but should represent the best of one’s analytical writing.
Digital Presentation
Digital presentations can take the form of a website, podcast, or video. They must be approved ahead of time by the English department faculty.
Creative Writing Senior Requirement
Public Reading
A 20-minute public reading in March/April (or December) of one’s best creative writing; it does not need to be new work. Majors electing the reading option will read together in groups of three and the English department faculty will arrange the time and place of the event.
Possible venues include: WAC South Lounge, The C-Haus, or Gallery ABBA. Note that you will need to make your own arrangements for C-Haus, and that you will need to advertise your reading.
Printed Booklet
A booklet containing at least:
- 40 pages of prose, or
- 20 pages of poetry, or
- 30 pages which proportionally combine prose and poetry.
The booklet need not consist of new work but should represent the best of one’s creative writing. Booklets must be paginated and include a cover and table of contents.
Three copies of the booklet are due the Friday before the last week of classes in the spring (or fall) semester. One copy must be delivered to the advisor and two copies to the chair—one will be placed in the college archives.
Please do not wait until the last weeks of the semester to plan and produce your booklet. Students have found Digicopy to be a helpful and economical print service. Note: students, not the department, assume the cost of the booklet.
Other Media
A website or other creative presentation (e.g., via radio, video, or podcast). Any project other than a public reading or printed booklet must be approved ahead of time by the English department faculty.
