At an affiliate ABET-accredited institution: Students will follow a two-year program of study, leading to either a either a Bachelor of Science (BS) or an Masters of Science (MS) degree in engineering.

Overview

[placeholder content] The 4-2 Engineering Program is a unique dual-degree pathway that allows students to integrate the broad, critical thinking skills of a liberal arts education with the specialized technical knowledge of engineering. Students spend four years at Beloit College completing a bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as physics, mathematics, or computer science, followed by two years at a partner engineering school to earn a Bachelor of Science in Engineering.

This program is ideal for students who want the best of both worlds: the personal attention and interdisciplinary opportunities of a liberal arts college and the cutting-edge training of a top-tier engineering institution. Graduates of the program are highly sought after for their ability to tackle complex technical challenges while understanding their broader social and ethical contexts.

A group of students collaborate on a physics project in class. Most Physics courses include time working hands-on in a lab under faculty supervision.

A student works with a milling machine in the Physics Machine Shop in the Science Center. Student can get hands-on experience with in the Physics Machine Shop in the Sanger Center for the Sciences or at the Maker Lab at the Center for Entrepreneurship (CELEB).

Engineering Core Coursework

Required courses (10 units), completed with at least a “C” average:
1. Two units of chemistry, including Chemistry 220.
2. Two units of computer science.
3. Mathematics 110, 115, 290, and 201.
4. Physics 101 and 102.
Recommended courses:
1. Chemistry 220, 230, and 235 (for chemical engineering).
2. Economics 199 (required by some engineering schools).
3. Engineering 105.
4. Geology 100 or 110 (for civil engineering).
5. Mathematics 275 and/or 205 (required by some engineering schools).
6. Physics 210 (required by some engineering programs).
7. Engineering 220 (required by some electrical engineering programs).
8. Physics 330 (for civil and mechanical engineering).
Twenty-three units of Beloit credit (for 3-2 program), at least 16 of which are in residence.
Completion of all remaining Beloit College degree requirements.
Any additional courses required for admission to the engineering institution.
Attainment of an engineering degree from an ABET-accredited institution, with at least a “C” average in the engineering college. Courses and grades from the engineering institution are transferred to Beloit and are counted into the student’s Beloit College grade point average, for purposes of requirements and honors.

4-2 Enginerring Program

Students opting for the 4-2 program must complete a non-engineering Beloit major (such as chemistry, math, or physics, but the degree can be in any major), including the minimum 31 units of Beloit credit; students will receive their Beloit degree before matriculating at the engineering school. Students must complete the engineering core in order to be certified by the Beloit liaison to an affiliate school. Students then follow a two-year program of study at an ABET-accredited engineering institution, leading to either a B.S. or an M.S. degree in engineering.

Students will receive a bachelor’s degree from Beloit with the Beloit major listed on their transcripts. The “engineering program” major will not be listed on the transcripts.

Ordinarily a student will need to choose between 3-2 and 4-2 by the end of their sophomore year, since the requirements of a Beloit major must be met for the 4-2 program.
