Environmental geology applies geologic principles to environmental problem solving. It examines the formation of soil, water, and minerals, and investigates issues like groundwater contamination, landslides, erosion, climate change, and natural resource management.
Understanding Earth’s systems is essential for protecting communities and ecosystems. Environmental geology prepares you to analyze natural processes, assess environmental risk, and recommend solutions for sustainable land and resource use.
Environmental geology at Beloit College is a flexible environmental science major focused on how Earth systems work, how they change, and how human activity shapes those changes. You learn to analyze groundwater, soils, climate patterns, geologic hazards, and land use impacts, gaining the scientific tools needed to confront real environmental challenges. Students regularly conduct original research and present their findings at regional and national meetings.
Fieldwork is central to the program. You will investigate local rivers and glacial landforms, join multi-day regional trips, and occasionally participate in extended excursions to places where environmental change is especially visible. Many students study abroad to explore coastlines, volcanic terrains, and mountain systems, deepening their understanding of global environmental processes.
Research and mentorship complete the experience. Students take part in summer projects with Beloit College faculty, the Keck Geology Consortium, and national programs, often contributing to senior thesis work. On campus, you work with professional tools to analyze water, soil, and sediment supported by collaborative lab spaces, a fully equipped field gear room, and a close-knit departmental community. Whether your interests center on climate history, groundwater, natural hazards, or sustainability, Beloit College provides the preparation and faculty support needed to launch a meaningful career in environmental science or pursue advanced study.
Coursework integrates geology, biology, chemistry, physics, statistics, and environmental studies. Students build strong field and lab skills and complete a capstone thesis guided by faculty mentors.
Students build the scientific and analytical expertise needed to address environmental challenges related to land, water, and natural resources. They gain practical skills in field methods, laboratory analysis, and geologic interpretation.
