Overview

[placeholder content] The Minor in Journalism equips students with the foundational tools to craft compelling stories across multiple platforms, including print, digital, audio, and video. Whether you’re passionate about investigative reporting, feature writing, or multimedia storytelling, this program emphasizes both the technical skills and ethical principles needed to succeed in a fast-paced and evolving media landscape.

This minor is an excellent complement to majors such as English, Political Science, Media Studies, or Business Management, providing students with versatile communication skills and a sharp understanding of media’s role in society. Graduates with a background in journalism pursue careers in news organizations, public relations, content creation, and more, where they shape narratives and provide critical insights to diverse audiences.

At Beloit College, you’ll learn from experienced faculty with real-world expertise, work on campus publications, and have opportunities to intern with regional and national media outlets. Our program emphasizes hands-on experience and critical analysis, preparing you to make an impact in the ever-changing world of journalism.

Curriculum

Journalism 125.
Journalism 225 or 264.
Journalism 155 or 264 or 1 approved course in another applied method of communication such as photography, Web design, or digital media, public speaking, or television or radio broadcasting.
One internship chosen in consultation with a journalism advisor, or one semester of experience in an editorial position of the Round Table, or Journalism 228.
One supporting course relevant to the prospective career interest of the student or English 226. (A course used to fulfill an all-college distribution requirement may not be used as the supporting course for the journalism minor.)
Normally courses taken to satisfy a major may not be counted toward the journalism minor, and no more than 2 other courses from the English department may be counted toward the journalism minor.
