Honors and Awards
The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures nominates its students for the prizes and honors listed below. Note, students may not self-nominate. Faculty members will nominate students based on their performance and qualifications.
Departmental Honors
Students with an outstanding grade point average overall, a minimum 3.6 G.P.A. in the MLL major, and consistent excellence of coursework within the major may be nominated by a MLL faculty member to complete a scholarly project in the senior year (1 unit of Special Project 390). Additionally, to be awarded departmental honors a student must complete his or her scholarly project to the satisfaction of the sponsoring faculty member and an additional faculty reader.
International Foreign Language Honor Society
Phi Sigma Iota is an international honor society that recognizes outstanding students in the academic fields of foreign language, literature, and/or culture.
To be eligible a Beloit student must be:
- A junior or a senior
- Enrolled in a 200-level or higher foreign language or comparative literature course at the time of nomination
- Have an G.P.A. of 3.250 overall and in foreign languages courses taken at Beloit College.
Prizes
French
Richard Foster Street Memorial Award in French
Awarded annually to an outstanding sophomore or junior French major. Established in 2004 by Jack Street, professor of Modern Languages and Literatures, in memory of his brother.
Russian / Modern Languages
Charles Eugene Street Award in Russian or Modern Languages
The award recognizes an outstanding sophomore or junior majoring in Russian or modern languages. Established in 1995 by Jack Street, Professor of Modern Languages and Literatures, in memory of his brother.
Spanish
Heather Lutton Spanish Prize
The Spanish faculty will nominate an outstanding Spanish major, ordinarily in his or her junior year. The award is granted on Honor’s Day in the spring.
Sonia Moncada Street Endowed Award in Spanish
In memory of Prof. Jack Street’s wife, Sonia Moncada Street, who taught Spanish in the Beloit schools for many years before her retirement, the prize is awarded by the Spanish faculty to an outstanding Spanish major, ordinarily in his or her junior year. The award is granted on Honor’s Day in the spring.
Scholarships
Richard Blakely Scholarship
Established in 1987 by Dorothy Blakey in memory of her husband, Richard, an economics and business major from the class of 1933 who was a successful lawyer. His life was influenced by history professor, Robert “”Dickie”” Richardson (1901-1947). Award to students who are majoring in English or modern languages and literatures. MLL awards in even years.
Stephen Moncada Street ’77 Endowed Scholarship
The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student of French.
Mary E. Storer Scholarship
The scholarship is awarded to an outstanding student of French or another foreign language.
