Last year marked big changes for Beloit College’s dance program, as its 30th anniversary coincided with the program’s integration with theatre and music into the college’s new Performing and Applied Arts major and with Professor Chris Johnson’s retirement from teaching dance.

Improvisation for Theatre class and the cast of Trapped in a Musical

Your worst date as a musical

After improvising their way through Chicago traffic, students from the Improvisation for Theatre class laughed along with the work of professional performers. Based on a disastrous Everglades date told by Trevor Cisneros ’28, one of the acts crafted a hilarious musical adventure filled with love, gators, and painted nails.

“Seeing their peers progress and having their progress witnessed is truly gratifying for each student. This in turn helps their mental health, strengthens their connections to other humans, and eases the pressure they put on themselves both academically and socially,” says Gina T’ai, an associate professor in the Performing and Applied Arts department, says of the dance program.

Rehearsal for Murder

Beloit College students performed Rehearsal for Murder in April of 2024. The script was full of twist and turns, and the performance required the full use of the theatre space.

Chelonia 2024

Chelonia is Beloit’s annual evening of concert dance spanning featuring multiple dance styles. This year featured work by AJ Juarez, an Argentinian choreographer who works in Hip-Hop Dance and Latin Fusion, as well as new works from dance faculty and student choreographers.
