Simone Harstead (IR & Spanish - Class of ’16)

Simone Harstead studied abroad in Spain. Fluent in Spanish, she taught the language to senior citizens in Beloit and worked with children from Spanish-speaking families at a local school. As a summer intern at the National Economic and Social Rights Initiative, she worked on issues related to human rights abuses along the U.S.-Mexico border.  Simone also interned at the Wisconsin Women’s Network for nine months. She wrote her senior thesis on reproductive rights in Latin America.  After graduation, Simone used funding from the Weissberg program to volunteer at a health clinic in Nicaragua. She worked as a women’s  health advocate before she joined Her Justice as a legal assistant working with low-income women. She is currently attending CUNY law school.
