In this adventure novel set in the 1840s, Samantha Swift is a rookie war correspondent, covering the Mexican-American War from the Mexico side. Jack Dancer is a secret agent for the United States, charged by the President with stopping a western expansion of slavery on U.S. lands. The characters’ paths collide as they attempt to solve a murder, evade attacks on their lives, and decipher the keys to a lost treasure.
After a successful career in marketing and publishing, the author turned to historical fiction writing. He dedicates this book to his Beloit history professor Robert Irrmann, “who made history spellbinding,” and to Beloit College, founded the same year this story takes place.
