Book cover of Gendering Antifascism by Sandra McGee Deutsch'72. “Gendering Antifascism” by Sandra McGee Deutsch’72In her new book, Sandra McGee Deutsch, professor emerita of history at the University of Texas at El Paso, describes Argentine women’s resistance to extreme rightists, tyranny, and militarism through sewing and knitting during World War II.

Their work, engaging in solidarity with U.S. Allied Forces, brought together women of diverse socioeconomic, political, religious, and ethnic backgrounds and culminated in the Victory Board. The organization advocated for women’s suffrage and participation in governance, developing relationships with the Uruguayan anti-fascist group Feminine Action for Victory, British and U.S. governments, and prominent female activists.

The Victory Board’s experience contains lessons for movements opposing fascism and rightist populism today.

While the college had a year-round calendar, many students lived off campus and could avoid college rules about pets, so it was common to see dogs visiting campus.
