In Remembrance: Malcolm “Mike” Hartman ’66
Malcolm “Mike” Hartman ’66—runner, veteran, adventurer—passed away on Oct.14, 2024.
Hartman was a two-time Midwest Conference champion in cross country at Beloit, and an all-American in 1964. He was captain of the cross country team his junior year and co-captain his senior year, and was named MVP. The five-mile men’s event in the annual Beloit Cross Country English-Style Invitational Meet is co-named in his honor. He continued running marathons and other long distance events throughout much of his adult life, and was an active member and leader of the Atlanta Track Club.
After graduating from Beloit, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, and had the good fortune of being stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. Upon his return, he settled in Atlanta, Georgia, where he earned a master’s degree in urban planning and had a long career working with employee stock ownership plans and business valuations.
Beloit College always had a special place in his heart. He gave generously of his time and talents, worked on several alumni committees, and supported Beloit’s “Be All In” campaign. Soon there will be a new endowed fund in Mike Hartman’s memory to support Beloit’s cross country and distance running programs.
He loved to travel, play golf, and collect art made by people he loved and during his travels to Europe and Africa. He is survived by his wife, Susan Hartman, sister Nan Grossman, brother Landis Hartman, four daughters, three stepchildren, fourteen grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He is remembered for his enthusiasm and for his love of life and family.
