Prepare for Graduate School

Start the process early, take it one step at a time, and work with Career Works and your faculty advisor from the very beginning!

Step 1: Are You Ready for Graduate School?

Graduate school helps you expand your career opportunities while deepening your expertise in a particular field. It also involves a major investment of time and money. Before you apply, consider these core questions to determine if grad school is right for you.

  • Do I know what I want to study and why?
  • What impact will graduate school have on my future career?
  • Am I financially prepared?
  • What is the application process and timeline?

Step 2: Choosing a Graduate School

Searching for a graduate school is very similar to conducting academic research. You must first identify a topic, then gather and evaluate evidence, pay attention to both big and small questions, and come to conclusions. This time, however, your research topic is your future career. When applying to graduate schools, you’ll need to learn about each program’s faculty and curriculum.

Career Works and your faculty advisor can help you decide which factors are most important to consider as you narrow down your options. You should also strive to apply for a combination of safe, middle, and dream schools.

Step 3: Get Your Documents in Order

Each school’s application requirements vary slightly, and those differences are important. Pay close attention to each school’s instructions on what documents you need, how to format them, and how to submit them.

In general, most schools require:

  • Resume or CV
  • Statement of Purpose or Personal Statement
  • Letters of Recommendation
  • A score from a standardized test such as the GRE, GMAT, LSAT, or MCAT

Don’t worry- Career Works’ resources and advice will assist you in getting the needed documents ready!
