Get Credit for Internships

Students can turn their endeavors into credit-bearing experiences. Research shows that experience PLUS mentored reflection yields high impact learning.

Introduction

Students can earn academic credit for their internship experiences while also engaging in mentored reflection, through enrollment in PRAX 200, PRAX 201, or PRAX 301. Read the following for more information and to determine which course is best for your experience.

  • PRAX 200 – Internship: Students works with a faculty member who agrees to help them develop the content and form of the academic reflection, as well as provide assessment of whether the work merits the credit requested. (0.25 to 1.00 credits)
  • PRAX 201 – Internship Workshop: This is an online course taught by Career Works staff. It includes goal setting, self-assigned readings, reflective writing, and an introduction to professional writing and relationship building. This course may only be taken once. (0.50 credit)
  • PRAX 301– Advanced Internship Workshop: This is an online course taught by Career Works staff, intended for students who have already completed PRAX 200 or PRAX 201 or who have significant work experience. The course includes introductions to organizational leadership theory, reflective writing, and advanced professional writing and networking. This course may be taken twice. (0.50 credit)

Registration

Each course requires a form to be completed and given to the Registrar’s Office. Before selecting which course to register for, please read the requirements for each course below.

Requirements for all courses

  • Students need to secure a internship field site.
  • Students may get academic credit for internships that extend across multiple semesters. However, they must register for different courses each semester.
  • The internship must be registered before the last date to add classes. (See the Academic calendar for dates.) There are no exceptions.
  • A full unit of internship credit (1.00) requires a minimum of 90 hours participating in the internship, and 0.50 credits requires 45 site hours minimum. (0.25 and 0.75 credits requires 23 site hours and 68 site hours minimum, respectively.)
  • Courses count towards the E graduation requirement. If a course is taken for 1.0 credit, it completes the E requirement. If not, students must complete other E-designated courses to complete the E requirement.
  • Courses are graded Credit/No Credit (CR/NC). If the student doesn’t meet the agreed upon assignments or the site hours, no credit will be awarded.
  • Tuition is charged for all credit-bearing experiences. For current tuition rates, please review the Bursar office’s website tuition information. For summer experiences information, refer to the “Summer Special Projects/Internships” section.
