Requirements & Election
How to become a member of Phi Beta Kappa.
Requirements for Election
The Beloit College chapter of Phi Beta Kappa elects new members each year from the graduating class. Our selection criteria are aligned with the national stipulations. The criteria fall into these broad categories:
- studying the liberal arts and sciences with both breadth and depth
- studying a second, non-native language
- studying mathematics, logic or statistics
- having good moral character
Selection Criteria
A student must meet all of the following criteria to be elected to Beta of Wisconsin:
- A student must have completed a minimum of 16 units at Beloit College.
-
A student must meet all of the following course of study requirements:
- completed the general education requirements of domains, skills and 18 units outside of program of study for a Beloit College degree where this requirement can be modified to take into account modified Beloit College requirements, and
- completed successful study at high school and/or college of at least the equivalent of an intermediate college-level language course of a second (non-native) language, (listed below) and
- completed an appropriate college-level mathematics, statistics or logic course (listed below).
-
A student must meet these GPA requirements:
- If the student is a junior they must have at least a 3.95 GPA.
- If the student is a senior they must have at least a 3.8 GPA.
-
To elect students with good moral character, no student will be considered for selection if s/he has any of the following:
- been formally sanctioned for violating the academic honesty policy, or
- two or more security or police documented events with a substantiated judicial action taken by the Dean of Students, or
- any substantiated offense of theft or assault.
-
Because we are a very selective honor society, we impose the following restrictions on total electees:
- No more than 2% of a given class can be elected as juniors.
- No more than 10% of a given class can be elected. This means the total of junior and senior electees for a given class cannot exceed 10% of the total number of students in that graduating class.
If the cap on the total number of electees is hit by the other criteria, the students with the higher GPAs will be selected. Note that not being selected as a junior does not change eligibility for selection as a senior.
The list of students that are proposed to meet these criteria will be reviewed by the officers of the chapter to make sure they meet all these criteria and all such students will be approved by the officers for election to Beta of Wisconsin.
Additional Details
To meet the non-native language requirement for election to PBK, you must have completed successful high school or college study equivalent to an intermediate college-level course. The following is a list of approved courses that meet the requirement as long as you take at least 1 unit from the list:
- ARAB 110A-225A
- CHIN 110-230 and/or 110A-225A
- FREN 110-360
- GERM 110-249 and/or 251-305
- GREK 200-390
- JAPN 110-230 and/or 110A-225A
- LATN 200-390
- RUSS 110-220, 310-360 and/or 110A-315A
- SPAN 110-240 and/or 275-370
A range of courses indicates that all courses within that range meet the requirement. For example, SPAN 110 through 240 meet the requirement but SPAN 241 (and through SPAN 274) does not. If the course number is followed by an “A” then it is a CLS course.
It is impossible to list all courses that come from elsewhere (transfer, study abroad, off-campus study) that might meet this requirement. If it meets the requirement after review by the officers then it will be allowed.
If your native language (one you spoke/studied) is other than English, then we consider your study and knowledge of English by being at Beloit College to be sufficient to count as at least an intermediate college-level study of a non-native language. Normally this is easily determined from your college record that indicates your home country. If there is any question we try to contact you. You can also contact the chapter president if you think it will not be clear.
To meet the mathematics, logic and statistics requirement for election to PBK, the course must show up on your Beloit College transcript. The following is a list of approved courses that meet the requirement as long as you take at least 1 unit from the list:
- ANTH 240
- BIOL 247
- ECON 251
- HEAL 201
- MATH 104-116, 118-269 and/or 271-379
- PHIL 100
- PHYS 206
- POLS 201
- PSYC 162
- SOCI 205
A range of courses indicates that all courses within that range meet the requirement. For example, MATH 104 through 116 meet the requirement but MATH 117 does not.
It is impossible to list all courses that come from elsewhere (transfer, study abroad, off-campus study) that might meet this requirement. If it meets the requirement after review by the officers then it will be allowed. Note that the course must be worth more than 0.5 unit to count for this requirement. If you have any questions, please the chapter president.
