Testing & Certification


The steps you need to work as an educator.

All Education and Youth studies majors will have the opportunity to earn a teaching license allowing them to teach in the public schools in addition to earning their bachelors degree from Beloit College.

Beloit College, is authorized by the Department of Public Instruction in Wisconsin to certify graduates for initial educator licensure in the following areas:

  • Elementary and middle school (grades K-9)
  • Middle and high school (grades 6-12)
  • Art (grades K-12)
  • Theatre (grades K-12)
  • Foreign language (grades K-12)

To be endorsed for a Wisconsin teaching license, must the following requirements. For additional information, please review the Education & Youth Studies requirements.

Required Tests for Certification

Subject Areas

Students must demonstrate their knowledge of their subject areas through notable achievement in relevant majors or classes, or through testing.

In addition, elementary teachers must also take the Wisconsin Foundation of Reading test. In preparation for this test, please view the preparation materials provided by Wisconsin Foundation of reading.

Note: The state superintendent has adopted the 190 version of the Foundations of Reading Test effective September 1, 2022, with a passing score of 233. This test will be available to test takers beginning on August 31, 2022.

Students planning on licensing in a Foreign Language(PK-12) will need to get a recommendation per their advisor as well as take the ACTFL language proficiency exam prior to student teaching. 

Teaching Performance Assessment (edTPA)

Students who are planning on certifying and earning a teaching license will also complete a Teacher Performance Assessment (edTPA) during their student teaching term. Completion and submission of this assessment is required by Beloit College.
