Student Teaching & Fieldwork
Learning by doing.
A variety of clinical experiences are a vital phase in an Education or Youth Studies major’s professional preparation. By its very nature, time within the surrounding area classrooms places the student in a dual role, that of a student and that of a teacher.
We have students work in a variety of different environments during their time at Beloit College, whether it is doing field work or internships for or time within a variety of classrooms working in collaboration with professors, students and local cooperating teachers. Our program prepares graduates to teach in diverse settings, and to help students find purpose in their lives by learning to creatively tie their subject matter and passions to make fun, interactive lessons and programs to use upon graduation.
Student Teaching
Student Teaching (EDYS 302, 303, 304) is offered each fall (occasionally in spring) for 3 units and includes a seminar and supervision/administration of student teaching. Teacher Education students enroll in 3 units of fall student teaching equivalent of one college semester or one school district semester based on the calendar of the placement, and participate in the student teaching seminar. Please be aware that Wisconsin licensure requires that students complete one full and continuous semester of student teaching.
Application and Observation Forms
- Petition for Student Teaching: If you are in your second EDYS 300 and planning on student teaching, please fill out this form. It will help us gather initial information for your placement, state reporting, as well as help us for to be sure that you are on track to meet all the requirements for teacher certification.
- Student Teaching Agreement Form: This form serves as an initial step for those who are planning on student teaching. This form helps collect necessary data and start initial conversations between student, cooperating teacher, and principal. This form is to be filled out at the beginning of the semester prior to your student teaching semester.
- Wisconsin Teacher Standards Evaluation Form Throughout the duration of your coursework and student teaching at the college, each candidate pursuing teacher licensure will be evaluated multiple times during their clinical experiences by the Wisconsin Teacher standards. According to Wisconsin state statue PI34.002
Additional Information
If you are interested in study abroad, student teaching abroad (currently paused), or doing fieldwork abroad, we encourage you to have a collaborative conversation with both your EDYS advisor as well as the Global Experience Office (GEO) for optimum support throughout your study abroad experience. For those EDYS students who do not intend to certify to teach, early conversations with GEO are encouraged to find the best fit for your youth studies interests.
Take a look at the work former students had done:
Students wishing to student teach farther than 20 miles/20-minutes-driving from Beloit must petition the Department for permission. This petition should include a clear statement of the benefits to be gained from this placement, in terms of potential for
- working with diverse populations,
- learning about, and practicing, pluralistic approaches to pedagogy and curriculum,
- teaching in distinctive schools with distinctive cooperating teachers and pupils, or
- community involvement.
Students need to secure a placement with a cooperating teacher who has a Wisconsin teaching license in the corresponding field and meets other requirements set by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
Approved student teaching placements outside Beloit will be subject to an additional fee to defray transportation costs of Beloit College faculty supervisors, or contract an accredited teacher education program or local faculty in another location for supervision/administration of student teaching. Students are responsible for all costs of supervision. This will be billed to the student’s Beloit College account.
Placements are made in consultation with the student, and we try to consider the students’ needs, strengths and future plans. Visits to domestic student teaching placements by Beloit College faculty will be at the discretion of the Department.
Overseas Student Teaching (currently paused)
Whenever possible Beloit College faculty will visit all overseas student teaching placements, at no additional expense to the student. In most cases, overseas student teaching placements will be made through the University of Minnesota, Morris Global Student Teach Program (http.www.educatorsabroad.org). Students must complete at least one unit of student teaching, with seminar on campus, before beginning overseas student teaching. Please meet with your EDYS advisor as well as talk to the study abroad office early to begin talking through the great options awaiting educators.
The default expectation is for students to student teach in fall semesters. Student teaching may take place in the spring semesters with the approval of the advisor and the department.
Aside from personal transport, there are multiple options to get transportation to local schools, including car sharing, local buses, and taxis.
The Career Works office has vehicles available for student use.
If you would like to rent a school van, talk to a professor or the EDYS office about getting a van form. Van drivers must have a driver’s license and be approved by the Security office prior to using a school van.
For other ways to get off campus or if you need special accommodations, please speak to your professor.
Fieldwork
Fieldwork is the equivalent of student teaching for anyone who wants to do work in childcare, social work, or other youth studies related, non-teaching occupations. Students should contact the EDYS 306 instructor as soon as after they register for the course to discuss their fieldwork placement. They should do this in the semester before actual fieldwork starts. Students can register for 0.5-3 units of fieldwork each semester depending on their case. With permission from their EDYS advisor, students may substitute EDYS 306 with other 200- or 300-level courses that include a fieldwork component.
