History students engage in archival research, conduct public history projects, and create digital exhibits to share the results of their work.
Students can take classes, conduct independent research, or work as research assistants for faculty projects. Some examples of exceptional recent work are presented on this page.
A class we were especially proud of in Spring, 2019 is the Digital History Harvest: Black Migration to Beloit, Wisconsin, 1910-1970. We invited migrants and their descendants to a community event in March 2019 at a local church. Community members brought artifacts and photos and told the story of their own or their family member’s migration from the South to work in Beloit’s factories. Students digitally captured the artifacts that community members brought to the harvest. After the Harvest, students learned a computer program (Omeka) and made a digital exhibit that will be housed on the College and Beloit Historical Society websites.

In Spring, 2018, a class called “Creating Digital Archives” researched topics in Beloit College’s long history and created online exhibits about their topics.

Exploring museum careers and rare books
In late November, Beloit faculty and students took advantage of the college’s partnership with the Art Institute of Chicago to participate in a panel about careers in the museum industry, followed by an exploration of the Newberry Library’s rare book collection.

Eva Laun-Smith lands prestigious Fulbright Student Award
Eva Laun-Smith’21 is one of two Beloit graduates to receive a Fulbright Student Award this year. A history major and decorated track and field and volleyball athlete, Eva graduated with highest honors from Beloit.

Preserving the History of a Beloit Institution
Beloit College’s infamous bar, Coughy House or C-Haus, has a special place in Beloit’s history. Since it is temporarily closed, students are trying to keep that history alive for students in the future.

From Beloit to Budapest to Graduate School
Lauren Woolf ‘21 is braving the next chapter of her life by entering a graduate program in the Art Institute of Chicago for art administration and policy, and modern and contemporary art history. Lauren looks forward to breaking colonized museum policies and leading the next generation of museum professionals to change the field.
