What is an English minor?

The English minor gives you a strong foundation in reading, writing, and critical thinking through the study of literature, culture, and creative expression. You will learn how texts work, how writers make choices, and how stories reflect and challenge the world around them. Whether you focus on creative writing, literary analysis, or a blend of both, the minor strengthens your ability to communicate clearly and think analytically.

Students explore poetry, fiction, drama, essays, media, and storytelling across cultures and time periods. You will practice close reading, interpretation, and craft while learning how literature and language shape identity, community, and power.

Students edit the nationally recognized Beloit Fiction Journal, write for campus media, attend readings by acclaimed writers, and participate in workshops, contests, and creative events. Small classes ensure close mentorship with faculty who are both scholars and practicing writers.

The department’s integrated approach encourages students to move easily between creative writing, literary studies, journalism, and media. English curriculum

Students choose from courses in literary studies and creative writing, building skills in close reading, analytical writing, creative craft, and cultural interpretation. The minor is structured to complement any major and adapt to your interests.

English Minor (6 Units)

Students with a major in the English department may not elect this minor.

English 190 and 205.
One unit of literary history from English 194, 251, 254, or 258.
Three additional units from creative writing (English 210, 215, 220, 223, 224, 226, or 310) or literary studies (English 250, 251, 254, 258, 261, 262, 263, 264, 265, or 301).

Students with a major in the English department may not elect this minor.

Courses explore storytelling, poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, literary analysis, editing, genre studies, and the relationship between literature and culture.

[ENGL 190] Introduction to Literary Study: These courses introduce students to the close reading of selected poetry, drama, and prose, with training in analysis and critical writing.
[ENGL 194] Questioning Literary Traditions: This course introduces students to the formation and transformation of literary traditions in English, through a comparison of historical, cultural, national, or transnational works spanning at least three centuries.
[ENGL 205] Introduction to Creative Writing: Experimentation and practice in writing poetry, fiction, and nonfiction. Readings to suggest and illustrate forms and techniques.
[ENGL 301] Literature in Context: These advanced capstone seminars examine literature in ideological, artistic, historical, and/or rhetorical contexts. Courses address culminating problems or topics, require sustained individual projects, and/or explore practical questions and applications arising from literary studies and creative writing.

English outcomes

“Nobody’s afraid of comics,” says John Porcellino, who sees comics as a way to make poetry more accessible. “Comics and poetry are similar…there is rhythm in poetry, and rhythm in comics.”

When comics meet creative writing

A chance encounter at a Beloit book event grew into a unique classroom collaboration where comics and creative writing sparked new ways for students to tell their stories.
