GRE Professional Exam - Cheat Sheet to the Basics

Who takes the GRE?

If you are pursuing a:

  • Master’s
  • MBA
  • JD degree
  • Doctoral degree

Test available in the U.S. and worldwide (locations vary).

GRE Test Format

The general test is most often given via computer. Paper-delivered tests under special circumstances (including subject tests). 

Test takers can skip questions, review and edit answers, and have access to calculator.

Analytical Writing

  • Critical thinking and analytical writing skills
    • Analyze an Issue
    • Analyze an Argument
  • 2 sections, 30 min each

Quantitative Reasoning

  • Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, data analysis
    • Quantitative comparison
    • Multiple choice with 1+ answers
    • Numeric entry
  • 2 sections, 35 min each

Verbal Reasoning

  • Analyze and evaluate written information
    • Reading comprehension
    • Text completion
    • Sentence equivalence
  • 2 Sections, 30 min each

Registering for the Test

  • ETS account needed for registration
  • Computer-delivered tests available year-round
  • Monday testing for Sabbath observation available
  • Scores available in —10-15 days
  • Test can be taken once per 21 days, up to 5/year
  • Visit the ETS site for more details on available test dates, locations, paper-delivered tests, rescheduling, canceling, and ID requirements
