LSAT Professional Exam - Cheat Sheet to the Basics

Who takes the LSAT?

If you are to attend law school in the United States, Canada, and a selection of other countries.

Test available in the U.S. and worldwide (locations vary).

LSAT Test Format

The general test is given via computer. 

Section 1 - Multiple Choice Questions

Five 35-minute sections

  • Reading Comprehension – Understanding complex materials
  • Analytical Reasoning – Understanding structure and drawing conclusions
  • Logical Reasoning (2x) – Analyzing. evaluating, and completing arguments •
  • Unscored - unlabeled and for research purposes only

Section 2 - Writing Sample

35 minutes

  • Argumentative writing skills
  • Unscored but sent to law schools along with overall score

Registering for the Test

  • LSAC account needed for registration
  • Monday testing for Sabbath observation available
  • Scores available in ~3 weeks, by email
  • Test can be taken 3 times per testing year, 5 times with a 5-year period, and 7 times over a lifetime
  • Visit LSAT site for more details on available test dates, locations, rescheduling, canceling, ID requirements, etc.
