First Laugh Welcome, Baby!

By Nancy Bo Flood’67 and Rose Ann Tahe
Illustrated by Jonathan Nelson
Charlesbridge Publishing, 2018

First Laugh Welcome, Baby! is Nancy Bo Flood’s newest children’s book, co-written with the late Rose Ann Tahe. It illustrates the Navajo tradition of the first laugh ceremony, when the loved ones of a newborn baby anticipate the child’s first laugh with hope and joy. The book follows a family as each member tries to make the newest addition giggle. The first person to do so will host a special ceremony and hold a unique place in the baby’s life.

First Laugh has been chosen as a Junior Library Guild Selection, Notable Social Studies Trade Book, 2018 Southwest Picks of the Year, New York Public Library Best Book for Kids, and a Bank Street Best Book for 2018. It was included in the prestigious White Raven List by the International Youth Library, one of 200 books on the list.
