Accreditation sets Logan Museum apart from peers

Beloit’s museum of anthropology is one of only two accredited academic museums in the state of Wisconsin.

The Logan Museum of Anthropology earned reaccreditation in March from the American Alliance of Museums, a designation that sets the Logan apart among academic museums.

The Logan is one of only two accredited academic museums in the state of Wisconsin, and one of only two accredited museums among the Associated Colleges of the Midwest.

Accreditation signals that a museum is holding itself to high standards and best practices. To earn the distinction, museums must conduct a year-long self-study before undergoing a site visit. Logan Museum Director Nicolette Meister says accreditation “demonstrates that a small museum can not only meet but exceed national standards and best practices,” adding that the designation also allows the museum to successfully solicit more grants and funding.

Meister credits staff, stakeholders, students, and colleagues across the country who worked diligently to help the Logan achieve this recognition.

Founded in 1894, the Logan houses approximately 350,000 ethnographic and archaeological objects from 129 countries and more than 600 cultural groups. Its collections are widely used in teaching and are central to Beloit’s curriculum.
