by Whitney Dirks ’05
Amsterdam University Press, 2024

Monstrosity, Bodies, and Knowledge in Early Modern England: by Whitney Dirks '05 In 1680, a pair of conjoined infants were kidnapped and shown for money, giving rise to a legal battle over their ownership and income.

The book alternates between their story and the broader context of how so-called “monstrous births” (deformed humans and animals) were examined, exhibited, and portrayed.
