Teaching Beyond the Classroom: Meet Professor George Dalbo
EDYS welcomes Professor George Dalbo, who has joined the department in August 2025 as a new tenure-track faculty member. Originally from Western New York, Professor George Dalbo brings a rich academic and teaching background to Beloit College. With a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction - Social Studies Education, a strong foundation in sociology, and years of teaching experience in both Austria and the United States, he is deeply committed to education.
At Beloit, George is especially excited about the opportunity to work closely with students on long-term projects. “Faculty here get to collaborate with smart, creative, and motivated students in ways that extend beyond a single semester,” he says. This past summer, for example, he collaborated with a student to study how the Armenian genocide is taught in U.S. high schools. Their research, which included analyzing textbooks, interviewing experts, and creating lesson plans, was highlighted in two Armenian American newspapers and has already been adapted for Wisconsin classrooms. On campus, he describes his experience as “amazing,” praising the supportive students and collegial atmosphere. “The small size of Beloit allows for daily connections across departments—whether over lunch or in classrooms—creating a vibrant intellectual community.”
Beyond teaching, George is an avid cyclist who bikes everywhere, from cross-country tours to leading bike trips for summer camps. He is also a fan of young adult literature and sees reading as another way to connect with students’ perspectives.
When asked what advice he’d give to aspiring teachers in EDYS, he encouraged students to see teaching as more than lesson plans and classrooms. “Being a teacher is so much more than teaching—teachers are informal counselors and coaches. Don’t forget about all the other things teachers do,” he notes, urging students to take psychology courses, engage in the Beloit community, and embrace the full scope of what it means to be a teacher.
