From Beloit to Silicon Valley: Katie Phan and Julie Bach at the Viet Career Conference

Graduating seniors Katie Phan ’26 and Julie Bach ’26 spent part of their summer in Silicon Valley volunteering at the 2025 Viet Career Conference, a two-day national event supporting Vietnamese students and young professionals across the United States.

Both economics majors—Katie studying quantitative economics with double minors in finance and Chinese, and Julie double majoring in quantitative economics and data analytics—applied through Facebook to volunteer with Viet Career Guide (VCG), a nonprofit focused on career development and mentorship. Throughout the summer, they worked remotely with mentors and fellow volunteers to help organize the conference.

Held on August 15–16, 2025, the second annual conference brought together students, early-career professionals, and industry leaders for company visits, workshops, mentorship sessions, and networking opportunities. Highlights included tours of Microsoft and Google, a think-a-thon case competition, and a networking fair. Katie advanced as a semifinalist in the think-a-thon, collaborating with students from across the country.

As volunteers, Katie and Julie supported event logistics and coordination while building professional connections. “The Viet Conference isn’t just about job searching,” Katie said. “It’s about personal connections, genuine advice, and learning from real experiences.

Both students highlighted the professional skills they developed throughout the summer, including networking, communication, teamwork, time management, and multitasking. Weekly meetings, collaborative planning, and coordinating a large-scale event gave them practical experience they believe will be invaluable as they enter the workforce.

Reflecting on the experience, Julie noted that she previously underestimated the importance of networking. “Approaching networking as a way to learn—not just to secure a job—makes the experience more natural,” she said. She encourages students to step outside their comfort zones and take advantage of opportunities early.

Katie echoed that advice, recommending that students attend conferences in their fields as early as possible. Through conversations with professionals, including a financial accounting specialist at Deloitte, she gained concrete advice on credentials such as the CPA and CFA, helping her think more strategically about her next steps.

With support from Beloit College and the Economics and Business Department sponsorship, Katie and Julie’s summer experience offered more than professional development—it provided clarity, confidence, and a broader understanding of their future careers. As they prepare to graduate, both students carry forward not only new skills, but a strengthened network and a deeper sense of direction shaped by their time at the Viet Career Conference.
