In this photograph from the Hubble Space Telescope, three bright stars, each with cross-shaped diffraction spikes, appear in a small part of the stellar nursery known as the Taurus Molecular Cloud. At only roughly 480 light-years from Earth, it is one of the best locations for studying newly forming stars. The small orange spot just left of center below the clouds of the nebula is a newly formed protostar, hidden in a protoplanetary disc that obstructs some of its light.

Daniel J. Schroeder ’55 was selected to be one of NASA’s two telescope scientists to oversee the design and fabrication of the Hubble Space Telescope.
