Role Summary:

 

The Summer Library InfoDesk Assistant works at the front desk greeting patrons and assisting them in using the library and its resources. Student workers answer the phone and check materials in and out of the library as well as direct patrons to services and staff for assistance. In addition to working at the InfoDesk, summer workers are required to assist with reshelving, shelf reading of books, and conducting inventory on the library collection.

 

General Expectations:

*Arrives to shift on time consistently.

*Participates in and checks the team GroupMe chat regularly

*Understands the importance of adhering to the work schedule in order to provide essential library services.

*Finds own substitute if necessary, and in a timely manner.

 

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Interact with and convey a positive attitude towards library patrons both in person and over the phone
  2. Use the library computer system to check library materials in and out of the library
  3. Shelve and reshelve books and materials according to the Dewey Decimal System
  4. Assist with printers and other library resources as needed
  5. Process holds, take inventory, shelf read and other tasks assigned by the library staff including assisting with special events as necessary

 

Credentials and Experience:

  1. No library experience required, but preferred:
  2. Experience with Dewey Decimal System, troubleshooting printers and computers, also preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Ability to understand and appreciate the mission of a residential, liberal arts college and to work well, in a fast-paced office, with diverse faculty, staff, students, alums, and the general public in a variety of situations.
  2. Ability to contribute to learning and work environments welcoming to people from a diverse variety of backgrounds and experiences.
  3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills .
  4. Flexibility and willingness to adapt to changing activities, expectations, and responsibilities.
  5. Conform to an established work schedule and reliably work set hours as assigned.
  6. Excellent problem solving skills, with the ability to think critically, effectively prioritize, plan, and organize multiple tasks and projects and meet set deadlines without immediate and constant supervision.
  7. Knowledge of customer service standards and the ability to communicate effectively with faculty, administrators, staff, students, families of students, prospective students and their families and the general public.
  8. Ability to maintain confidentiality and to safeguard the confidentiality of records.
  9. Willingness to take initiative on tasks and special assignments.
  10. Willingness to take on additional responsibilities and tasks as assigned by supervisor
