Description

Beloit College seeks a full time security officer with a positive friendly attitude and the ability to work professionally and effectively in a diverse campus community. 40 hr/week position, requires availability to work all shifts, seven days a week, including holidays. Primary responsibilities include routine foot patrol, emergency response, responding to complaints, writing reports, service calls, safety inspections and other duties as assigned. Must be able to communicate orally in a helpful friendly manner and to communicate effectively in writing.

High School diploma, some college helpful. Must pass a criminal background check, have a driver’s license, a good driving record and reachable for emergencies. First Aid and CPR certification required within one year of hire. Prior security training or experience is helpful. Training and uniform equipment provided.

Shift required: 6 pm - 4 am

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Interacts in a professional manner with members of the campus and community while building and maintaining relationships that allow individuals who come with diverse social identities from many different cultures to feel comfortable in approaching and communicating with the officer.
  2. Patrols designated buildings and grounds of the College campus on a continuous basis in order to identify and assess situations that may affect the security and safety of the College and the College community.
  3. Protects life and property of the College and College community. Reports unusual or suspicious activities and inappropriate use of College facilities or property.
  4. Provides directions and assistance to students, employees, and the general public in a courteous, respectful and efficient manner, and provides personal escorts when requested or needed.
  5. Performs daily checks of all campus buildings and floors, which may include: locking and unlocking entry doors, checking authorized building uses, monitoring for safety concerns/hazards, inspecting mechanical equipment areas and reporting malfunctions to Facilities or other relevant departments as needed if correction isn’t possible.
  6. Responds to calls for service, which could involve resolving lockouts, housekeeping, maintenance or other issues as directed. Notifies relevant staff during business hours, or on-call staff after hours.
  7. Responds to emergencies or preliminary investigations of incidents in a timely manner, including but not limited to, medical / psychological / emotional emergencies, natural disasters, trespassing, theft, vandalism, threats of violence and disturbances. Identifies the source or cause of the problem, handles it effectively, and coordinates with appropriate campus or other public officials.
  8. Checks identification cards and gathers pertinent information from complainants, participants or witnesses to incidents. Completes any necessary administrative forms & provides factual, descriptive, typed reports.
  9. Maintains regular radio contact with dispatch to log what buildings they’ve checked, report unusual situations, and to request back up when necessary.
  10. Appears in court regarding incidents that occurred in the campus community when necessary.
  11. Conducts monthly fire equipment and other safety equipment inspections as scheduled or needed.
  12. Provides transportation for hospital trips and bank runs when necessary.
  13. Fulfill and perform all the duties required of the Security Dispatcher position.
  14. Activates the Emergency Alert notification system and scripts Community Alerts as needed.
  15. Performs other similarly related duties as assigned or required.

Credentials and Experience:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Formal training and/or experience in a related field preferred.

  1. Must display strong interpersonal and community relations skills and have the ability to listen, communicate, and work effectively while maintaining strong working relationships within a diverse community of faculty, staff, students and the general public.

  3. Ability to maintain total confidentiality due to the sensitive nature of some security department operations.
  4. Ability to exercise sound judgment and function in a calm and effective manner under stressful conditions.

  6. Ability to provide a high level of service to all stakeholders; capability of generating confidence and engaging others in shared problem-solving.
  7. Ability to accomplish assigned tasks while working within the framework of OSHA safety regulations that govern procedures of personal safety, chemical, and equipment usage.
  8. Ability to operate security vehicles and other maintenance tools, and wear a uniform as designated by S.O.P.
  9. Ability to produce accurate and detailed written reports as required by S.O.P.

Special Requirements:

  1. Must undergo a criminal background check in accordance with College policy.
  2. Must be able to work outside for duration of assigned shift.
  3. Must have, or be able to obtain within one year or less of employment, approved basic first aid and CPR/AED certifications.
  4. Must have and maintain a valid U.S. driver’s license and be insurable under College guidelines.
  5. Must be reachable for work-related issues.
  6. Must be willing and available to work any and all shifts including nights, weekends, holidays and overtime when required.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Requires full range of body motion including:
  2. Considerable walking and climbing stairs in all weather conditions.
  3. Ability to independently lift up to 40 pounds frequently and up to 75 pounds occasionally.
  4. Ability to perform bending squatting, twisting, crawling, and climbing.
  5. Ability to stand or walk for long periods of time, run in response to a call, and freely traverse campus.
  6. Ability to climb stairs and ladders up to 30 feet.
  7. Visual ability to safely and effectively operate equipment.
  8. Hearing and speaking abilities to effectively communicate through radio equipment and in person.
  9. Must maintain physical fitness standards so as to perform rescues, detention of suspects and other physically demanding assignments. May exert in excess of 100 pounds of force in restraining or transporting individuals.
