Student Assistant
The Dean of Students (DOS) office employs students to assist in providing the services and programs of the Beloit College DOS office, Advanced Mentoring Program (AMP) along with Student Success Equity and Community (SSEC), and International Student Services. These positions report to the Associate Dean of Students and the DOS Office Manager and support the work of other staff as needed. Each position includes general office work, but, more importantly, a significant paraprofessional assignment. All student staff will have the opportunity to develop and apply the Integrated Learning Outcomes as identified in the College strategic plan as essential skills for Beloit College students. The Integrated Learning Outcomes are described here: https://www.beloit.edu/offices/academic-affairs/integrated-learning-outcomes/ Effective Communication: DOS Assistants will communicate professionally, accurately, and in a timely manner using a variety of platforms with supervisors, co-workers, staff, faculty, prospective students and parents. Creative Problem Solving: DOS Assistants work to provide information, tools and solutions to improve services to students. They will attempt to provide solutions to broader campus challenging/ill-defined problems by applying sound reasoning, critical thinking, creativity, analysis, etc. Productive Collaboration: DOS Assistants work in a team and articulate goals and collaborate on ways to reach them. They will develop an understanding of larger work-related matters such as human motivation, conflict management, group dynamics, and effective work processes. Intellectual & Professional Agility: DOS must follow established policies, procedures, practices and communicate professionally. DOS Assistants act resourcefully to navigate complex situations and consult as needed. Lastly, they use accomplishments and mistakes to further their own knowledge and competence. Dean of Students - Student Assistant Specific Duties: Assist DOS staff on activities and programs to further institutional strategic plans (i.e. Schools), priorities (Anti-racism/Becoming Better), and compliance (Title IX, ADA, etc.) Create, update, and distribute publicity materials for department events and programming, as well as other informational materials/departmental resources (posters, signs, documents, etc). Maintain/update office social media presence on a weekly basis or as needed. Provide departmental assistance as needed during events presented by other offices in the DOS office suite (SSEC, International Student Services, LEADS). When requested, present at or coordinate programs related to the student life areas. Monitor the AMP email (advising@beloit.edu) Communicate with faculty to update advising information for first-year students. Facilitate, coordinate and communicate AMP Connections programming. Collaborate with the Co-Directors of AMP to generate publicity or create reports as needed. General Duties of Student Staff: Develop new ideas, projects, and services to enhance work of the DOS/AMP areas. Maintain DOS Bulletin Board (in collaboration with LEADS) with up to date information. Review and update DOS, AMP, Advising, and related websites in consultation with relevant professional staff. Provide information to individuals on various projects and resources, as needed. Provide excellent customer service, on the phone, in-person and online. Provide office support (copy, errands, distribute posters, get mail, attend to emails, etc.) Check email and office mail box for daily inter-office communications. Assist other DOS assistants, LEADS Learning Assistants, and professional staff with office work and projects as needed. Attend weekly staff meetings and beginning of semester training sessions. Keep records and appropriate paperwork as assigned. Complete special projects as assigned. Maintain a clean and orderly working environment. Specific Terms of Employment: Attend paid training (in August, and as needed) prior to classes. Room and board provided during training periods that occur outside of traditional room and board times. Additional training possible during the academic year. Work at least one hour each day of the week in the office (Monday – Friday when offices are open). Work between 5-10 hours per week during office hours, flexibility with class schedules provided. Remote work will be individually negotiated. Attend selected events, some during evenings and weekends. Must maintain good academic standing. Must remain a positive role model.
