Pre-Collegiate Program
The Pre-Collegiate Program, designed for grades 9-12, provides Academic & Curricular Enhancement (ACE), academic advising, educational workshops, college visits, family support, ACT preparation, and assistance with college applications, financial aid, and scholarships. Students may also have the opportunity to apply for a summer academic program.
Academic Year Program
During the academic year, Pre-Collegiate students can take advantage of ACE, special workshops, college visits, ACT Preparation, senior college application workshops, and financial aid workshops.
ACE is held at Beloit Memorial High School. Help Yourself staff will be available to assist you in all subject areas.
All students are more than welcome to attend any or all ACE sessions. The following are minimum attendance requirements:
- 3.0 G.P.A. and above: check in at least once per week
- 0.0-2.99 G.P.A.: at least one hour of ACE per week
All freshmen and new program participants must complete at least 1 hour of ACE weekly for the entire first quarter of participation, regardless of their GPA.
If you are participating in athletic study tables or receiving out-of-class help from a teacher, this time can count toward your ACE requirement. You will need to stop by check-in with the staff to have your arrangement approved.
If a student is struggling in a particular subject, Help Yourself families may request a tutor. In addition to helping students with their homework, tutors will be able to help with writing, critical analysis, time management, study skills, and organization. Tutors can help guide younger students through the transition from middle school to high school. Students taking AP or accelerated classes will also be able to find the help they need. Tutoring has something to offer for every student, regardless of their abilities.
Students will attend workshops covering topics such as study skills, stress management, and financial aid for college. Many of these workshops are led by faculty members from Beloit College.
Pre-collegiate program participants will have the opportunity to participate in multiple field trips each semester to visit regional colleges and universities. Through these field trips, students will gain insight into the college application and decision process and will begin to discover what they like in a college.
Through these visits, students will uncover what to consider when choosing a college. Participants will gain valuable insights into the college search process, including the distinctions between private and public colleges and universities, as well as the financial aid process and tuition costs. Students will also learn about essential aspects of the college experience, including extracurricular activities, course selection, and dining options. We hope that by attending these college visits, students will be better prepared to decide where they want to attend college.
The Help Yourself Program offers Get HYPed! (senior workshops designed specifically for our senior students). These workshops are generally offered once or twice a week from mid-July through late December, and take place on the Beloit College campus.
Get HYPed! sessions are designed to help students with many different aspects of the college application process. Students will be able to receive assistance in selecting which colleges to apply to, completing college applications, and writing personal statements, among other tasks. Senior workshops are mandatory for all 12th-grade participants.
ACT Ready is a collaborative project led by Beloit College pre-college staff and undergraduate students to provide 30 high school sophomores and juniors with intensive, ongoing ACT preparation and support to develop test-taking strategies, confidence, and college readiness to raise ACT scores. Focusing on combating the intimidation of standardized tests, ACT Ready will motivate and engage first-generation, low-income students through strategic workshops, one-on-one assistance, practice tests, and incentives to improve their ACT scores.
ACT Ready will involve a team of dedicated professionals and energetic college students to support and facilitate rigorous ACT study, practice,
and testing; workshops aimed at the outcomes; college visits to emphasize the ACT’s significance for admission/scholarships, and motivational incentives such as social activities to keep students engaged and committed
to the process for individual improvement.
Current Help Yourself sophomores and juniors will have the opportunity to apply to take part in this program.
Summer Program
The Pre-Collegiate Summer Program is designed to offer students an intensive experience that exposes them to college life and the expectations that come with it, provides a jump start for the upcoming academic year, and explores careers that require a college degree.
When offered, the summer program is available to Pre-Collegiate students entering the 9th-12th grades. Students may select to apply for either a two- or three-week track during our themed weeks.
There will be no Pre-Collegiate Summer Program in 2025. However, the summer program typically takes place during the first three weeks of July.
