Course Registration
Here you can find information about how to register and add/drop courses.
Registration Process
The course registration process is different for different students:
- Current Students consult with their advisor and register for courses online in the semester preceding the start of classes.
- New Students register for courses with their advisor.
- Special Students register for classes on a space-available basis, after degree-seeking students.
Dropping Courses
Sometimes students find themselves having difficulty in a course or courses. The student may be enrolled in a course that is too difficult, is taking too many difficult courses all at once, or may have gotten behind due to an illness, etc.
Please review the Academic Calendar for the course drop deadlines.
If dropping the course(s) causes a student to drop below full-time (3.0 units), serious consideration should be given to the ramifications of this decision: change in financial aid, personal insurance, inability to live on campus, or the inability to stay in the country for international students, etc.
As they consider their options, students are required to consult with the instructor, their advisor, financial aid staff (if applicable), and a staff member in the Dean of Students office.
Dropping Courses Before & During the First Week of Classes
A student can drop a course through their Portal login early during each semester’s:
- Online Registration Period for the upcoming semester.
- The Online Add/Drop Period following each Online Registration Period for the upcoming semester (typically open for a few weeks after Online Registration and then closes the last Exam Day of each current semester).
- The Online Add/Drop Period during the first week of classes each current semester. Portal will close to online add/drop requests after the first week of classes.
Dropping Courses After The First Week of Classes
A student can drop a course after the first week of classes and before the relevant drop deadline by acquiring an Add/Drop Card from the Registrar’s Office on the second floor of Pearsons Hall.
At this point in the semester, the Registrar’s Office requires the drop details and written approval of the relevant course instructor(s) and primary academic advisor (AMP or Major), via an Add/Drop Card to process a drop request.
The completed Add/Drop Card should be submitted to the Registrar’s Office for final processing.
Please reach out to registrar@beloit.edu or 608-363-2640 if you have any additional questions.
Students may appeal for a “withdraw passing (WP)” or a “late drop” through the Academic Performance Committee, which is coordinated through the Dean of Students Office.
Students considering these options are encouraged to meet with their advisor(s) and a staff member in the Dean of Students office to discuss the related policies and procedures and determine what is most appropriate for the situation.
A petition to the Academic Performance Committee for the late drop of a course will be considered only if the request is submitted within one calendar year from the end of the semester in which the student was enrolled in the course. Petitions must be submitted before students have been certified for graduation.
Petition forms for students and faculty support.
Please contact deanstu@beloit.edu with any questions or to start the process.
A student must
- provide a written petition requesting a “WP” (including the course number/section/title, the semester, and instructor name).
- have the instructor provide a written statement verifying that the student was passing the course with a “D” or better grade at the time of the request.
- have their advisor provide a written statement.
No credit is granted for a course in which a WP is received, but the course appears on the transcript with a grade of “WP”.

A petition to the Academic Performance Committee to withdraw from a course with a “WP” grade must be submitted no later than the last day of classes of the semester in which the course is being taken.

- have the instructor provide a written statement.

Waitlist
So long as any student is waitlisted for a course, no student may enroll in that course without instructor authorization, even if the enrollment has dropped below the cap. Instructors may authorize both waitlisted and non-waitlisted students to enroll above the enrollment cap or by waiving the prerequisite. These are separate authorizations; either one or both may be added by the instructor for a student. See Course authorization and waitlist (for students) or Course authorization and waitlist (for faculty) for a Portal view.
- If you are on a waitlist and the instructor authorizes you to enroll, you still need to go to the drop/add window in the Portal to actually enroll in the course. You will need to drop the course and then re-add it, or you may receive a prompt to change your status to enrolled.
- If you are not on a waitlist and the instructor authorizes you to enroll, you still need to go to the drop/add window in the Portal to actually enroll in the course. You will need to add it.
- If you no longer want to be on a waitlist, then please drop yourself.
