Professor Laura Parmentier welcomed into the ranks of faculty emeriti after 34 years of distinguished service to Beloit College.
Professor Emerita of Chemistry and Biochemistry Laura Parmentierreceived her B.S. in biology and chemistry from Northland College in 1984 and her Ph.D. in organic chemistry at the University of Wisconsin in 1990. She joined the chemistry faculty at Beloit College in 1991 and served as chair for many years. Throughout her career, she has developed, tested, and implemented curricular materials and classroom strategies that focus on student-driven construction of knowledge and inclusive pedagogies. In addition to teaching introductory, organic, and medicinal chemistry, Laura has taught a variety of courses on food and health, and she has served as chair of theProgram of Health and Society. As a scholar, Laura has collaborated with students and colleagues at Beloit as well as with colleagues across the nation and around the globe. She taught chemistry and environmental studies at the University of Glasgow as a visiting lecturer, and she studied glacial lake sediments for evidence of climate change at Sogn og Fjordane University College in western Norway. Her research interests are broad, spanning the fields of mechanistic enzymology, environmental studies, women in science, and chemical education.
