Learn with the experts

A Beloit College student stands in front of screens showing a 7-day weather forecast at WIFR.Students in Practicum in Broadcast Television courses visited the WIFR television studio in Rockford. Students spoke to employees about their pathways to a career in broadcast television and saw how the skills they are learning on campus are used in the real world.

Hello Beloiters!

Make some time in your schedules this week to take part in the first of the year’s residencies, the Ousley Scholar, which honors the legacy of Grace Ousley (1904), the first Black woman to graduate from Beloit College. The Beloit College Residencies are opportunities to learn alongside Nobel Prize winners, human rights leaders, and national poet laureates right here on campus.

Erika Allen, the CEO of Urban Growers Collective, is this year’s Ousley Scholar. Allen has dedicated her career to developing sustainable community food systems and forging economic opportunities for low-income individuals. Her keynote lecture, “Cultivating Community Empowerment Practices and Future Climate Innovations through Community Food Systems and the Arts,” will discuss a remarkable transformation under way in Chicago’s South Side, where historically disinvested communities have long been left behind.

Here at Beloit College you’re surrounded by expertise: your peers, your professors, your mentors in the community, the alumni network, and the visiting scholars invited to campus for Beloit College Residencies. Mark your calendars for Ousley events this week, and keep your eye out for future Beloit College residencies.
