What is Environmental Communication and Arts?
The environmental communication and arts major investigates how creative and communicative practices intersect with environmental questions. How do we tell stories about nature, resource use, change, and sustainability? How do design, film, visual arts, or new media contribute to environmental knowledge and public engagement?
Students learn to create meaning through cultural practices and media, studying both the tools of production (e.g. digital media, exhibit design, documentary) and the content (environmental science, ecological systems, social impact).
Why study Environmental Communication and Arts?
If you’re drawn to art, media, or storytelling and passionate about environment and sustainability, this major will bridge those interests. You’ll gain skills in visual communication, media production, narrative framing, project design, and critical reflection on environmental issues. These abilities apply to gallery- or media-based careers and to roles in nonprofit strategy, corporate sustainability, community outreach, or public policy, where communicating environmental ideas is increasingly important.
