Explore Europe through history and culture

What is European Studies?

European studies examines the ideas, cultures, histories, and political forces that have shaped Europe and influenced societies across the globe. The field asks important questions about how Europe has defined itself, how its artistic and scientific traditions have shaped the world, and how conflict, migration, political change, and cultural exchange continue to influence the continent today.

Students explore Europe through multiple lenses. They consider how historical events, literary and artistic movements, religious traditions, philosophical ideas, and political structures developed and interacted. European studies encourages students to understand how Europe has been imagined, contested, and transformed, and how these debates still shape public life and cultural identity.

Why study European Studies?

Studying Europe provides tools for understanding how ideas travel, how political systems evolve, and how cultural identities form. Europe has produced influential intellectual, artistic, economic, and scientific developments and is the site of major conflicts, colonial empires, and social movements whose effects reach far beyond its borders.

Students gain the ability to analyze cultural and historical patterns, understand competing perspectives, and connect local issues to global histories. These skills prepare students for work in law, public policy, international relations, education, cultural heritage, journalism, business, and nonprofit leadership.
