Christina Gorczynski’02 YAA

2012 Young Alumni Award

In the 10 years since Christina Gorczynski graduated from Beloit, she has earned her juris doctor and her master’s degree in business administration. She has served as a grant research assistant in the City of Houston Mayor’s Office, aide for a Houston city councilor, a public interest law fellow, and a coordinator at Houston’s Orange Show Center for Visionary Art. Today, she serves as the executive director of the League of Women Voters in Houston.

Even as a student, Christina was not one to sit on the sidelines. A women’s studies major, she was a student government member; the co-director of Making Latinas Healthier Action Group; a student director for the Women’s Studies Outreach Campaign; a group leader in the Women in Education Action Group; and editor and founder of the International Women’s Issues Reader to name just a few. She received the Women’s and Gender Studies Leadership Award and the Houston Area Alumni Scholarship. She studied abroad in Poland and Costa Rica.

Christina says she uses the leadership lessons she learned at Beloit in her current job at the League of Women Voters and in her activism efforts.

She was named the Top Fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in 2011, and received the “Smackdown Your Vote” Youth Engagement Award from the League of Women Voters of the United States and the President’s Award from Houston GLBT Political Caucus, among others.

One of Christina’s favorite Beloit stories happened after she left Beloit. As a law student, she was on her way to Malta to participate in a study abroad program when she ran into a fellow Beloiter in a London airport. It turned out her former classmate was also participating in the Maltese program called Consortium for Innovative Legal Education. “Two Beloit people ended up in the same program on the tiniest island on the face of the Earth,” she marveled. “That shows how Beloit offers a different way of thinking.”

For her dedication to equal rights and her tireless service and advocacy, the Beloit College Alumni Association is pleased to present Christina Gorczynski with the 2012 Young Alumni Award.
