An exchange student from Czechoslovakia who was enrolled here when that nation was swallowed by the Nazis, you won the affection and confidence of the campus community with a warm personality and a fine intellect that gained you Phi Beta Kappa honors. You earned a master’s degree at Nebraska, then enlisted in the Army in 1942 and soon obtained your citizenship. After completing doctoral studies at Duke, you began teaching in 1947 at Sweet Briar College, where you are Carter Glass professor of government. Nationally known as an expert on Asia, you have been a Fulbright Award student at the Institute in Indian Civilization, a faculty fellow in Asian Studies at Michigan and director of a faculty seminar in India through a women’s college exchange program. An author, lecturer and reviewer who is listed in Who’s Who, you have retained your interest in Czech affairs and have extended your research into environmental controls. Beloit College, which you say provided your best introduction to the American way of living and thinking, proudly awards you this citation in grateful recognition of your fidelity to its high academic goals.
