1978 Distinguished Service Citation

Your Army Air Force experience in radio during Word War II set the stage for your versatile career in communications and education. After graduate work at Northwestern University, from which you have master’s and doctorate degrees, and study at the NBC Summer Television Institute, you returned to Beloit in 1952 as a faculty member. Your teaching inspired an upsurge of campus interest in speech and debate before you left three years later to manage two Massachusetts commercial radio stations. You next taught at Syracuse University, then in 1963 came to the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, where you served as first chairman of the Department of Mass Communications and, until recently, as director of the Instructional Communications Center and general manager of station WUWM. Popular as a mass communications lecturer and book reviewer, you have been an officer and committee chairman for state and national professional associations and for the past decade have moderated “Innerview,” a bi-weekly television series. Beloit College is pleased to honor your dedication to its high academic standards by awarding you this Distinguished Service Citation.
