Merrill C. Rueppel’49 DSC
1974 Distinguished Service Citation
The announcement of your appointment last year as the seventh director of Boston’s century-old Museum of Fine Arts described you as representing “an extremely happy marriage” of the administrator and the art historian and as an ideal choice to assume the complex responsibilities of directing one of the country’s prestigious leading art institutions. Holder of M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Wisconsin, you served first at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and later as assistant director of the St. Louis Art Museum before becoming director of the Dallas Museum of Fine Arts. During eight years in Texas, you acquired a reputation for converting a sleepy regional museum into a first-class institution on a limited budget. Author of exhibition catalogues, contributor to professional journals, and member of the Internal Revenue Service Art Advisory Panel, you have been a consultant for the Ford Foundation’s Museum Curatorial Tutoring Program and secretary-treasurer of the Association of Art Museum Directors. Your alma mater proudly recognizes your outstanding achievements by awarding you this Distinguished Service Citation.
