Journalist – Civic Servant

Crediting Beloit for teaching you to think for yourself and the late Professor Ivan M. Stone for setting an example of integrity, you have converted a boyhood interest in journalism into a career as a newsman concerned with the welfare of his fellow citizens. In 1962, after nine years with the Associated Press, you joined the Arizona Republic, for which you cover the state legislature. A fact-finding, award-wining reporter who has investigated state infiltration by crime figures, the penal system and a mine disaster, you received a Pulitzer Prize nomination for your intensive probe into bribery and other irregularities in the tax and corporation commissions. During 1974, you were selected Arizona’s Newsman of the Year and panelist for the National Criminal Law Symposium. Correspondent for Newsweek magazine and past president of the Arizona Press Club, you still have found time in your full schedule to serve as a church board chairman, and Explorer Scout advisor and a Citizens Organized for Deaf Education member. Your Alma Mater recognizes with pride your many professional and civic accomplishments by presenting you this citation.
