William B. Crawford’51 DSC

Your ability and talent earned your one of the new CBNS Foundation News and Public Affairs Fellowships at Columbia University and the eventual reputation as a cult figure among the network’s Washington bureau producers.

1986 Distinguished Service Citation

The adage, “Like father, like son,” could have been written with your family in mind. The legacy of alumnus Kenneth G. Crawford, prominent newspaper and magazine columnist, you arrived on this campus convinced that journalism was your cup of tea. Soon after graduation, you were on your way – first as a newspaper reporter in Madison, next as a CBS radio news writer, and then into television as a writer on the Douglas Edwards evening news show. Your ability and talent earned your one of the new CBNS Foundation News and Public Affairs Fellowships at Columbia University and the eventual reputation as a cult figure among the network’s Washington bureau producers. You have since divided your time between the nation’s capitol and New York as a special-programming and news editor, executive, and producer and since 1983 have been a senior producer of the award-winning Evening News with Dan Rather show. In appreciation of your significant professional achievements – and of the strengthening of ties to your Alma Mater now as not only the son of a graduate but also the father of one – Beloit College is honored to award you this Distinguished Service Citation as you return to the campus for a 35th Reunion gathering.
