Lyle Gramley’51 DSC

During the economic uncertainty of the past several years, his insight and experience have been widely sought by educators and journalists.

2011 Distinguished Service Citation

Few Americans have risen to the heights of economic policymaking that Lyle Gramley has in service to his country.

One of only 78 Americans to have served on the United States President’s Council of Economic Advisers since its inception in 1946, he took his place on the Council in 1977, offering the President of the United States objective economic counsel on domestic and international policy. From 1980-1985, he served at the pinnacle of monetary policymaking in the United States, as one of seven Governors of the Federal Reserve Board—and one of only 89 citizens to have served in such a capacity.

He was a longtime staff economist within the Federal Reserve System, becoming director of the Board’s Division of Research and Statistics. In the private sector, Lyle has applied his acumen in economic forecasting and monetary policy to his work with the Mortgage Bankers Association and Stanford Washington Research Group. Most recently, he has been involved with Soleil Securities Group, Inc. and the Potomac Research Group Holdings as a senior economic advisor. During the economic uncertainty of the past several years, his insight and experience have been widely sought by educators and journalists.

Lyle Gramley earned his master’s degree and his Ph.D. from Indiana University, but Beloit could not be more proud that he studied economics at Beloit College first. A stellar student and member of Phi Beta Kappa, he graduated in 1951.

Generous with his time and experience, he has been a true and constant friend to Beloit College over the years, participating in many events and sharing his expertise with Beloit College students. In so doing, he has helped to foster the next generation of leaders in the field of economics.

It is with great honor and pride that we present Lyle Gramley with the Beloit College Alumni Association’s highest honor, the Distinguished Service Citation.
