Ruth Vosburgh Smith’55 DSC

You are a highly sought-after speaker and writer.

1995 Distinguished Service Citation

A leader on the national level for community colleges throughout your career, as a teacher, counselor and an administrator, your contributions have been significant. When you began your career after twenty years raising a family, you taught school and then moved to counseling at a community college. That change led you into administration when you were asked to develop the Women’s Development Center for women returning to college and entering the workforce. For twenty years you have served a variety of community colleges, from Dean of Community Services and later Dean of the College at Genesee Community College in New York to your first presidency at Mountain Empire Community College in Virginia to your present position at Highland Community College in Freeport. You were an original board member for The Displaced Homemakers’ Network in Washington, D.C., worked to found the American Association of Women in Community and Junior Colleges, served as a member of the Freeport Memorial Hospital Board, Today’s Bancorp Inc. Board of Directors and you have served in numerous other volunteer capacities. You have been honored by many organizations as well–named woman of the year by the American Association of Women in Community and Junior Colleges, outstanding adult educator by the Milwaukee Council of Adult Learning and received the Bert Tavenner Memorial Award from Highland Community College students. You are a highly sought-after speaker and writer. You continue to regularly share your gifts with Beloit College students and alumni–returning each year to speak and to attend the career fair. It is with great pleasure that the college acknowledges your accomplishments by presenting you this Distinguished Service Citation on the anniversary of your Class’ 40th reunion.
