Robert E. Porter, Jr.

Truly you are a leader in the medical community.

1996 Distinguished Service Citation

It is no wonder that your connection to the College has been strong. No fewer than 52 members of your family are Beloit alumni and your mother taught on the music faculty for 20 years. While you began your college career at MIT, you soon found engineering not fully satisfying and came to Beloit to finish your undergraduate studies. You earned your MD at the University of Chicago in 1960 and took additional graduate study and residency work at the University of Iowa. Your hospital and academic appointments have included posts in Syracuse, New York, and Sheffield, England as a flight surgeon with the US Air Force. Since 1982, you have served as staff orthopaedist at the prestigious Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and as associate professor of orthopaedic surgery at Dartmouth Medical School. You have a distinguished record of service as a member of the New Hampshire Medical Society, the New Hampshire Orthopaedic Society, the New Hampshire Board of Registration and Medicine, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the Northeast Medical Association. You have especially devoted yourself to the Federation of State Medical Boards, which assists its member boards in licensing and disciplinary actions. You have served in a number of elected posts for the Federation, most recently as its president. Truly you are a leader in the medical community. Your dedication extends beyond the medical field, as shown in your service as a member of the Boards of Trustees of the Montshire Museum in Hanover, New Hampshire and of your alma mater, both from 1985 to 1993.

Beloit College proudly recognizes your humanistic leadership and achievements by awarding you this Distinguished Service Citation on the occasion of your 40th Class Reunion.
