Esther Atkinson Loomis’1919 DSC

1969 Distinguished Service Citation

Civic Leader – Personnel Director

Teacher – Civic servant – businesswoman – world traveler: as a lifelong resident of the Greater Beloit area, you have gained distinction through a varied career which found you first teaching Latin, English, and mathematics, then serving as coordinator of distributive education at the Beloit Vocational, Technical, and Adult School, and finally performing as the personnel and training director for a major Beloit department store. Not content with a busy professional schedule, you have given spare moments to the Civic Theater, Community Concert Association, Civic Symphony, United Givers Fund and American Field Service. You also helped organize a local chapter of the Credit Women International, served as an officer of Altrusa International and edited its district publication, and participated actively in the Blackhawk Personnel Association, Retired Teachers Association and other community welfare groups. Your efforts not only brought you awards for Latin projects, for preparation of training manuals, and for an outstanding master’s degree thesis, but also recognition in “Who’s Who Among American Women” and “Who’s Who in the Midwest.” A seasoned traveler, you have covered more than 100,000 air miles in visiting all the states, Europe, the orient and the Middle East. Beloit College takes great pride in presenting you this citation today, at the time of the 50th Reunion of your Class. You join your husband, Orson, who was cited two years ago, in this select circle – making it the first time your Alma Mater has honored an alumni couple in this manner.
