Emmert L. Wingert’1919 DSC

In 1956, you lived up to your college-day nickname of “Judge” when Governor Walter Kohler appointed you a Justice of the State Supreme Court.

1969 Distinguished Service Citation

Attorney – Judge

For nearly half a century, your name has been synonymous with the legal profession in the State of Wisconsin. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Beloit College, you continued your record as an honors scholar at the Harvard Law School, which granted you its degree in 1923. After brief service on the staff of the Wisconsin Attorney General’s office, you embarked upon a private practice of law in Madison which was to continue uninterrupted for 33 years. In 1956, you lived up to your college-day nickname of “Judge” when Governor Walter Kohler appointed you a Justice of the State Supreme Court. Following three years of distinguished service as a member of the state’s highest court, you returned to private practice and assumed prominent positions in your field of concentration – constitutional law. You were the logical choice of a special panel of three federal judges in 1962 to serve as special master to consider the reapportionment of the state’s political districts. Your outstanding record of leadership and dedication has earned you terms as president of the bar associations of both Dane County and the Seventh Federal Circuit and of the Madison Community Chest, and membership on The State Insurance Laws Revision and The State Retirement Research committees, and a spot in “Who’s Who in America.” Your knowledge and experience also have promoted the University of Wisconsin Law School to call upon you as a lecturer. It is with great pleasure that Beloit College honor you as your Class observes the Golden Anniversary of its Commencement.
