William H. Short’1922 DSC

You now join as a recipient your late aunt, Jessie M. Short, Class of 1900, the first alumna so honored 26 years ago.

Your close association with Beloit College began the day you were born, for your family lived on Church Street across from Emerson Hall. With a father who studied at the Academy and two uncles and an aunt who attended the College, your eventual matriculation at Beloit was foreordained. Following graduation, you completed formal studies at Kent College of Law in 1926 and were admitted to the Illinois Bar that same year. Since 1959, higher education in general and Beloit in particular have benefitted from your masterful specialization in bond counsel work incidental to college financing, most of it related to federal loans. Through your firm and the Illinois Educational Facilities Authority, you have provided noteworthy legal service to 66 leading private colleges. Recognized as an architectural historian, you have also earned listing in “Who’s Who in the Midwest” through dedicated service as a United Fund president, school board member, YMCA director, symphony orchestra trustee, and savings and loan director. In recognition of your fidelity to the high ambitions of our college, your Alma Mater is pleased to award you this Distinguished Service Citation, hoping that the honor intended is strengthened by the realization that you now join as a recipient your late aunt, Jessie M. Short, Class of 1900, the first alumna so honored 26 years ago.
