You had a talent for making students aware of the storehouse of knowledge and encouraging them to explore and utilize it.

1976 Distinguished Service Citation

A prominent historian and gifted educator for four decades, you had a talent for making students aware of the storehouse of knowledge and encouraging them to explore and utilize it. Holder of a doctorate from Yale University, you taught at Carnegie Tech and Rutgers before beginning a 17-year affiliation with Ohio’s Lake Erie College, where you also were social studies chairman. Assigned to Robert College in Istanbul as a Fulbright lecturer in the early ’60s, you returned to it to close out your career as head of the humanities department and director of bicultural humanities. Of your four books, “The Story of Our Civilization” has appeared in hardback and paperback, while “World Civilizations” is a standard college text in its fifth edition. You also have authored numerous articles and reviews for major publications. Your Alma Mater takes great pride in recognizing you – the son of a Beloiter who became the College’s first alumni secretary and the brother of two others – for your loyal devotion to higher education and academic excellence by presenting you this Citation as your Class observes its 50th Reunion.
