1977 Distinguished Service Citation

You began your work experience as a pick-and-shovel gold and copper miner in Montana, an unusual start for one whose later career would range from distinguished public service to leadership in the motion picture industry. After receiving a law degree from the University of Chicago in 1933, you held various federal government staff positions before serving four years on the Securities and Exchange Commission as a Roosevelt appointee. You then became a motion picture executive, first with Paramount Picture Corporation and later with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, where you were president and board chairman before retiring in 1969. Your contributions to both profession and mankind have won many honors, including the “Motion Picture Pioneer of the Year” award, the Brotherhood Award of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, and the March of Dimes Humanitarian Award. You also have served higher education as a trustee of Beloit College and as a member of Notre Dame’s Business Advisory Council. In recognition of your outstanding achievements, Beloit College proudly awards you this Citation on the occasion of your 50^th Class Reunion.
