Richard A. Thayer’1928 DSC

Your exemplary humanistic interests and concerns so well symbolize a major goal of Beloit College.

1978 Distinguished Service Citation

Family Physician – Cardiologist

A mathematics major who was greatly influenced by Beloit zoology Professor Clarence Turner, you abandoned plans to study civil engineering to continue a family tradition in medicine. After completing medical studies at Northwestern University and interning in Chicago, you returned to your native Beloit and entered general practice with your father, became city health commissioner and helped launch the tuberculin skin-testing program in schools. Your long and deep interest in electrocardiology permitted you to play a major role in the development of the intensive- and coronary-care units at both the old and new Beloit Memorial Hospital facilities. This special interest also has its personal side, for you yourself are the beneficiary of a cardiac pacemaker. Past president of the Rock County Medical Society and the hospital staff, you have also served as a church vestryman, police and fire commissioner, and Red Cross and Visiting Nurse Association director. Because your exemplary humanistic interests and concerns so well symbolize a major goal of Beloit College, your Alma Mater proudly awards you this citation on the occasion of your 50th Class Reunion.
