Dedicated to a concept of learning and self-improvement, you have inspired thousands to become more able, effective, and useful citizens through listening, thinking, and speaking.

Your power and wisdom with the spoken word have brought you wide acclaim as a Beloit boy who made good in the big time in a big way as a top administrator and public relations executive. You gave early signs of the successful career you were to shape for yourself while working nights a Fairbanks, Morse and Company to pay your way through college, yet managing enough few moments to excel in track, in the leadership of campus publications and organizations, and in debate, oratory, and student politics. Dedicated to a concept of learning and self-improvement, you have inspired thousands to become more able, effective, and useful citizens through listening, thinking, and speaking. You touched the lives of numerous others as an A. O. Smith Corporation official loaned executive to the Milwaukee United Fund Drive and as the firm’s administrator of civil affairs – encouraging employees to take part in politics on the grass-roots level, briefing management on legislation affecting the company and its employees, and proposing programs of political action. Long interested in public speaking, you in 1962 were elected president of Toastmasters International, which with a membership exceeding 85,000 is 45 countries at that time was described as “the world’s largest speech laboratory.” Your service as head of YMCA, Association of Commerce, Masonic and Credit Union groups has earned for you natural inclusion in “Who’s Who in America.” You have brought fame to your Alma Mater, and it is with great satisfaction that I am pleased to award you this Distinguished Service Citation.
